Alden Skoglund, 83, Salem, formerly of Canova, passed away August 31, 2011. A memorial service will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 3 at Sun Prairie Baptist Church, rural Salem. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am on Friday at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem with the family present from 6-8 pm. Alden Skoglund was born on September 25, 1927 in Salem, SD to Phillip and Esther (Gabrielson) Skoglund. He grew up and attended school in the Canova and Salem area. He married Delores Linn on May 12, 1946. They lived in Unityville, SD for 5 years at which time Alden drove truck and then they moved to the family farm where he farmed with his father. In the 1950’s they opened and operated the first Bed and Breakfast in South Dakota. They also hosted foreign exchange students for 19 years. Alden also really enjoyed traveling. Alden was a lifelong member of Sun Prairie Baptist Church where he accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and served in various service positions. He served as a board member on the Canova Lumber Yard, Vermillion Township Board and as a member of the Farmer’s Union. He was very active in Pheasants Unlimited and had hosted many out of state hunters. Alden had previously been in the trucking business and delivered to all 48 continental states for Feterl Manufacturing. He also drove bus for Jack Rabbit Bus Lines. Alden especially loved to hunt and fish. Alden is survived by: his wife, Delores of Salem; five children, Charles (Connie) Skoglund of Sioux Falls, SD, Linda (Allen) Thygeson of Piedmont, CA, Betty (Norm) Olson of Rochester, MN, David (Mary) Skoglund of Canova, SD, and Paul Skoglund of Tracy, MN; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arvella Jacobson of Salem, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and their wives, Vernon (Myrtle) and Clifford (Adeline) and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Jacobson.
